Time range and live mode
The time range answers “which window am I looking at?” One range, set in the header, applies to every page, and Live decides whether the page keeps up with new data on its own.
- Page title and breadcrumb
- Command palette (⌘K / Ctrl+K)
- Time range presets
- Custom time range
- Live: refresh every 10 s
- Theme switch (light, dark, system)
The time range controls are items 3 and 4 in the header; Live is item 5. The rest of the header is described in the Tour of the app.
Presets
Section titled “Presets”The presets are 15m, 1h, 24h and 7d: the last 15 minutes, hour, day or week, ending now. 1h is the default. The selected preset is highlighted. Choosing a preset also ends a custom range.
Tayga keeps data for 7 days, so 7d is the longest range.
Custom range
Section titled “Custom range”A custom range is a fixed window in the past, for example the hour of last night’s incident.
-
Select Custom… in the header. In the command palette, the action Time range: Custom range… opens the same popover.
-
Set From and To. The fields are in your local time and start from the range on screen.
-
Select Apply. Cancel, or Esc, closes the popover without a change.
The button then shows the window, for example Oct 4 12:00 – 14:00 (with the end date when the range spans two days), and stays highlighted. Choose a preset to go back to a range that ends now.
Apply refuses a range the API would reject, and says why under the fields:
| Message | Rule |
|---|---|
| Enter a start. / Enter an end. | Both fields are required. |
| The end must be after the start. | |
| The end must not be in the future. | The end may be at most 60 seconds ahead of your clock. |
| A range can be at most 7 days long. | |
| A range must be at least 1 second long. | |
| The start must be within the last 7 days (data retention). |
Live mode
Section titled “Live mode”Live refreshes the data on the page every 10 seconds. It is on by default, and your choice is stored in your browser.
- The dot beside the label pulses while Live is on.
- Hover over the button to see its state: “Refreshing every 10 s”, “Paused while the tab is hidden” or “Auto-refresh is off”.
- Live pauses while the browser tab is hidden and resumes when you come back.
- With a custom range, Live is off and the button is greyed out (“Live is off for a past range”): a window with a fixed end has no new data.
Some views always show the current state, whatever the range, and keep refreshing while Live is on even during a custom range:
- the services degraded badge in the header, which covers the last 15 minutes (see the Tour);
- the job status strip and the consumer lag on the Pipeline page.
How the range travels
Section titled “How the range travels”The range stays the same when you move around: through the navigation rail, the command palette, the keyboard shortcuts and the links between pages. Page filters do not travel: a service filter on the Traces page does not follow you to the Stories page.
A story page shows its group trend over the header range, widened to the shortest preset that contains the story when the story is older than the range, so an older story still shows its group.
URL parameters
Section titled “URL parameters”The range is part of every page’s URL, so a shared link shows the same window.
| Parameter | Values | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
since |
15m, 24h, 7d |
A preset ending now. Absent means the default, 1h. |
since + until |
since any length from 1s to 7d (<n>s, m, h or d); until an RFC 3339 time in UTC, such as 2026-10-04T14:00:00Z, or Unix seconds |
A custom range: the since-long window ending at until. |
For example, /traces?since=2h&until=2026-10-04T14:00:00Z shows the traces between 12:00 and 14:00 UTC on 4 October. An until without since uses the default length, 1 hour. An invalid until or since is ignored, and the page falls back to a preset.
- During an incident, keep 15m and Live on. Afterwards, set a custom range around the incident and share the URL in the postmortem: the link keeps showing that window until it ages past 7 days.
- The KPI tiles on the Stories page compare the range with the window before it, so 1h compares this hour with the previous hour.
