Command palette and keyboard shortcuts

The command palette answers “how do I get there fast?” Type part of a service name, a story summary, a log line or a trace id, and jump straight to it. It also switches the theme and the time range. Keyboard shortcuts take you to each section without the mouse.

Press ⌘+K or Ctrl+K on any page (either works on every system), or select the search field in the header, “Jump to service, trace id, template…”. Press the shortcut again or Esc to close it.

  • Search input (1): type here; up to 200 characters.
  • Recent: the last items you opened from the palette (pages, services, story groups, templates and traces), newest first, up to 10. They are kept in your browser.
  • Pages (2): Stories, Traces, Service map, Log alerts, Log templates and Pipeline health, with their shortcut, where they have one.
  • Actions (3):
    • Theme: Light, Theme: Dark, Theme: System;
    • Time range: 15m, 1h, 24h, 7d, which end a custom range;
    • Time range: Custom range…, which opens the header’s custom range popover;
    • Sign out, only when sign-in is turned on. If it fails, the palette says “Couldn’t sign out, try again”.

As you type, Pages and Actions narrow to the ones whose name contains the text, and Tayga searches the server (shortly after you stop typing). It shows up to eight of each:

Group Matches Opens
Trace A 32-character hex trace id, as typed or pasted The trace view.
Services Services whose name contains the text, among those seen in the last 24 hours The service map with the service’s drawer open.
Story groups Groups whose story summary contains the text, from the last 7 days, most stories first. The hint gives the kind and the count. The Stories page with the group selected.
Templates Log templates whose text contains the text. The hint gives the service. The template page.

The search ignores case. While it runs, the palette says “Searching…”; “No matches for “…”” when nothing matches; and “Search is unavailable.” if the server cannot answer. Pages and actions still work then.

Everything you open from the palette keeps the current time range.

↑ and ↓ move through the list (it wraps around), Enter opens the highlighted item, and Esc closes the palette and returns focus to where you were. The footer of the palette repeats these keys.

  • Paste a trace id from a log line or another tool straight into the palette: it opens the trace without a search.
  • Typing part of an error message finds both the story groups and the log templates that contain it.
  • Recent items make the palette a quick way back to the service or template you were just looking at.
